There are a ton of elk hunting workout plans out there, but statistically very few hunters will be successful at implementing them. It’s not that they don’t work, it’s that most hunters just have too much going on in life to make them a priority.
In this video, Cliff goes over what to focus on when thinking about physical preparation for mountain hunts and a hack that actually works when it comes to being in shape for your Fall hunts.

Calisthenics and rucking all you need in real world environment. Gym bros rarely do well in real world environments. Also stay away from preworkouts or anything like that. You will end up reliant on it to perform.
Great video. I recently got into rucking and I love it. I’m blessed to live in WAR TORN Portland Oregon, where I can be in the woods and climbing elevation after a mile hike from home. Like you said, you HAVE to find something you love to do and integrate it into your life. For me it used to be Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA, now it’s rucking/hiking with a sandbag and archery. And even better, there’s an archery range I can ruck to. I recommend staying away from overly marketed brands like GoRuck. I have some videos on how to get started for under $100.
I’m sure I can google this, and I should, but a thing I’ve noticed recently is the difference in elevation of where I live (Phoenix) VS where I hunt. I was near Durango in September and got my first animal (bow elk) and I also went for a run after to stay up with training. The elevation destroyed me. Like flat out winded on mile one or two of a 4-5 mile run that would be easy at home.
Is VO2 max relative to elevation? Does increasing it basically increase my fitness at elevation or is that false? Love the content man. I’m pretty green but shit I’m trying. Got an exo mtn pack, a tent, a quilt. I’m gathering supplies for my first true hunt. The first one was on private. It counted, but I really want to get one on public
Great video! Any suggestions on training for drawing a bow!
I just imagine a bull getting away in my head and it motivates the shit out of me to push harder in the gym
