Turkey hunting success often comes down to woodsmanship, patience, and positioning—not just gear. In this clip, legendary turkey hunter Stanley Wymbs shares practical advice on setups, calling strategy, reading terrain, and the common mistakes that keep hunters from killing more gobblers.
Stanley explains how to “drive a turkey” with calling, why hunting the side of ridges and road bends can be deadly, and why many hunters rely too heavily on decoys and equipment instead of fundamentals. He also talks about the importance of patience in the turkey woods and how sitting quietly longer can bring birds you never knew were there.

Patience is key. Took my daughter out on Saturday and we were able to get 60 yards from a Tom and a group of hens. He wouldn’t even acknowledge my calls so we just sat there and shut up. Watched the group at 60 yards for three hours before they finally got on the move and headed our way, following the creek. He finally popped his head out between a couple trees and my daughter put him down with her .410
How about them coming up from behind you!! I’ve had several not come to the decoy but be quiet then gobble behind me. And most of the time. They won’t come in – in any direction. But if you can turn. Whoops. He busted me. lol. Several times. One year I set up backwards and killed a bird. lol. So who knows.
Can’t have the patience when on public did it this weekend on a hard bird let him sit things were about to go perfectly hit him hard right after I moved on him he gobbled twice and then boom he got shot someone else moved in on him he was letting the world know where he was just not moving
